THE MAREN FAMILY
Spirulina production in Cambodia was started by the Swiss Antenna Foundation as a way to alleviate malnutrition and a way to create sustainable work for local people.
The Maren family was chosen to participate in an Antenna Foundation sustainable development project. A project to provide sustainable businesses for local people as well as to provide nutrition for malnourished children. The construction, funding and training was provided by the Antenna Technologies France. Antenna also provided the stock cultivars.
The Maren family has been producing and selling spirulina for 10 years. This provides work for 4 family members as well as work for part-time workers.
Quality is regularly tested at the Pasteur Institute in Phnom Penh. Further testing has been done at MB Labs in British Columbia to meet provincial health standards.

THE KIMRON FAMILY
Sunsorya Fair Trade Co-operative supports Kimron Rom and her family who are registered trading partners of the Kampot Pepper Promotion Association. They have been in the business since 2012.
Kim Rom and her family in Siem Reap, Cambodia; in partnership with the Kampot Pepper Association and Sunsorya Co-op, bring this unique pepper to Canadians who appreciate the delicious flavour and quality of this fairly-traded, organically grown pepper. Kampot Pepper is designated a Protected Geographical Indication (PGI), which is extremely rare for a spice, and also carries the ECOCERT organic certification. The PGI designation dictates which plants from the Kampot region must be used to produce Kampot Pepper, which ensures a high, consistent quality. And ECOCERT has become a benchmark in organic certification worldwide.
Sunsorya's commitment to fair trade principles encompasses several key aspects:
- Fair Compensation: Sunsorya ensures that farmers and artisans receive fair prices for their products, providing them with a reliable income that enables them to support their families, invest in their communities, and improve their livelihoods.
- Social Responsibility: Sunsorya prioritizes social responsibility by promoting safe working conditions, respecting labor rights, and advocating for gender equality and social inclusion within its supply chain.
- Environmental Sustainability: Sunsorya is committed to environmental sustainability and promotes practices that minimize environmental impact, conserve natural resources, and support eco-friendly farming methods among its producer partners.
- Transparency and Traceability: Sunsorya maintains transparency and traceability throughout its supply chain, providing consumers with information about the origins of their products, the producers involved, and the fair trade practices implemented.
Through its dedication to fair trade principles, Sunsorya Fair Trade Co-operative contributes positively to the global marketplace by fostering ethical trade, supporting community development, promoting environmental stewardship, and offering consumers access to responsibly sourced and ethically produced farm direct products.
